Without Environmental Health, There Is No Human Health

As world leaders, researchers, and advocates gather for COP17 (UNCCD) under the theme Restoring Land. Restoring Hope, one truth stands out above the rest: we cannot protect human health on a degraded planet.

Land degradation, drought, and water insecurity are often discussed as environmental issues. But in reality, they are immediate public health and security crises.

The Scale of the Challenge

The numbers tell a clear story:

  • 40% of global land is already degraded (Source: UNCCD).
  • Over 2 billion people currently live in regions facing severe water stress (Source: UN-Water).

When land degrades and water sources dry up or become contaminated, the consequences ripple directly into healthcare systems. We see rising rates of waterborne illnesses, increased risk of infection, and escalating threats like Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and sepsis.

Bridging the Gap with WHISGreen

At the World Health Innovation Summit CIC (WHIS), our WHISGreen initiative was built specifically to address this intersection.

By applying a systems-level approach across energy, waste, and water innovation, WHISGreen focuses on prevention as the true foundation for sustainable health policy.

Our core alignment with COP17 focuses on three key pillars:

  1. The Land–Water Nexus: Healthy soil and resilient water systems are the ultimate frontline against disease prevention and infection vectors.
  2. Prevention Over Reaction: Moving away from expensive, reactive crisis management toward proactive, climate-resilient community infrastructure.
  3. Blended Finance for Impact: Combining public and private capital to drive real restoration. Every $1 invested in ecological restoration yields between $7 and $30 in economic and health benefits (Source: WRI/UNCCD).

Building a Resilient Future

Restoring our land isn’t just about preserving nature—it’s about building resilient communities where people can live healthier lives.

Read our full framework in the WHIS Green – Climate & Health: High-Level Brief to see how we are turning policy into place-based action. Together, we can create a sustainable future where communities and ecosystems thrive side by side.
