In a global medical first, Australia has made history. A patient from Sydney has become the world’s first individual to be discharged from hospital with a fully implanted, long-term artificial heart, marking a major leap forward in the future of heart failure treatment.

The surgery, conducted at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, saw a team of pioneering surgeons implant the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart—an innovative, compact titanium device that mimics the natural function of the human heart using advanced magnetic levitation technology. Designed to provide a durable, long-term solution for patients with end-stage heart failure, the artificial heart represents a transformative alternative to traditional heart transplantation.

At the heart of this innovation is Dr. Daniel Timms, an Australian biomedical engineer whose personal experiences inspired the development of the BiVACOR heart. His father’s battle with heart disease and their shared interest in mechanics laid the foundation for what is now a medical milestone.

The BiVACOR device works by suspending its internal rotor in place using magnetic fields, eliminating friction and reducing wear and tear—key factors that prolong its lifespan and lower the risk of blood clotting. This breakthrough allows the device to function continuously, much like a real heart, making it a true replacement, not just a temporary solution.

After over 100 days living with the artificial heart, the patient eventually received a donor heart. However, the success of the implant and the patient’s discharge from hospital represent an extraordinary proof of concept: that artificial hearts could soon become mainstream in supporting and even replacing failing human hearts.

This achievement forms part of the Australian Government’s $50 million Artificial Heart Frontiers Program, aimed at fast-tracking the development and commercialization of artificial heart technologies.
