Thanks to Mayor Ravi Bhalla and his team at the City of Hoboken for giving us a valuable insight into the actions they are taking to mitigate climate change.
We got a insight into the devastating effects that flooding has and the issues Cities must face. From water pollution to energy challenges and the impact on people’s health and wellbeing.
Flooding is the most common natural disaster globally, affecting more than two billion people worldwide between 1998 and 2017 and with 44% of disasters worldwide associated with it.
As climate change makes the world increasingly susceptible to extreme weather events, more people are likely to experience flooding and its devastation, including its serious impacts on our health.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report published in March 2022 highlighted that climate hazards such as flooding are “increasingly contributing to a growing number of adverse health outcomes”.
Hoboken is serving as a model for cities 🌏 🌍 🌎 on how to create green, open spaces that can store water to mitigate flooding.
The green spaces also provide citizen with opportunities to improve their health and wellbeing.
We also discussed the issue of climate litigation which was the topic of discussion at last weeks UKSIF event in London.
