Last week marked an important milestone in advancing international cooperation in genomic medicine. In partnership with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), Public Policy Projects convened a high-level roundtable discussion exploring how global collaboration can shape the next decade of genomics and improve outcomes for patients and families around the world.
The discussion centred on the Emirati Genome Programme (EGP) — one of the world’s largest and most ambitious population genomics initiatives, with more than 800,000 genetic samples collected to date. The EGP is at the forefront of transforming healthcare delivery in the UAE, generating insights that drive precision prevention, early detection, and personalized care.
What’s particularly inspiring is how these findings are being put into action. Programmes such as the Premarital Genetic Screening and Newborn Genetic Screening Programme in Abu Dhabi are translating genomic science into meaningful, preventative healthcare for future generations. These initiatives highlight what’s possible when innovation, data, and public health come together for the common good.
Throughout the roundtable, one theme stood out clearly: the power of international collaboration. By sharing knowledge, research, and expertise across borders, we can accelerate the positive impact of genomics — ensuring that breakthroughs in science lead to real-world benefits for communities everywhere.
