According to the report AI as a Healthcare Ally, more than 5% of all ChatGPT messages globally are now health-related, and among its 800+ million regular users, one in four submits a healthcare prompt every week. That equates to over 40 million people worldwide engaging with AI on health every day.
This is not about replacing doctors. It is about people searching for clarity, understanding, and agency.
Navigating a System That Wasn’t Built for Patients
In the US, Americans are increasingly using AI to help them navigate the healthcare system itself, not just medical information.
Every week, users send nearly 2 million messages focused on health insurance — comparing plans, understanding prices, appealing denials, clarifying coverage, and dealing with billing. For many, AI has become a tool for self-advocacy, helping people prepare questions, understand rights, and even successfully challenge insurance decisions.
In the past three months alone:
- Three in five US adults report using AI tools for health or healthcare
- 60% used AI to explore or check symptoms
- 55% valued being able to ask questions at any time of day
- 52% used AI to understand medical terms or instructions This reflects a fundamental shift: people are no longer passive recipients of care. They are active participants — seeking understanding before, during, and after clinical encounters.
Closing Access Gaps — Especially After Hours
One of the most striking findings is when these conversations happen.
Seven in ten healthcare-related AI conversations occur outside normal clinic hours. For people working multiple jobs, caring for family members, or living far from services, this matters deeply.
In underserved rural communities, users send nearly 600,000 healthcare-related messages every week. In so-called “hospital deserts” — areas more than 30 minutes from a general hospital — ChatGPT averaged over 580,000 healthcare messages per week in late 2025.
States like Wyoming, Oregon, and Montana rank highest in these interactions, highlighting how AI is being used where access gaps are most acute.
AI cannot replace missing services. But it can help people interpret information, prepare for care, and navigate what is available — while also supporting clinicians under pressure.
Supporting the Workforce, Not Replacing It
Healthcare professionals are adopting AI rapidly:
- 66% of American physicians used AI in 2024, up from 38% the year before
- 46% of nurses now use AI weekly
- 75% of physicians say AI improves work efficiency

- Clarified regulation for consumer and clinical AI tools Already, innovators are using AI to repurpose FDA-approved drugs, accelerate biotech development, advance neuroscience research, and train future clinicians through realistic simulations.

AI is not a silver bullet. But it is becoming a trusted companion available after hours, in rural areas, during moments of uncertainty, and when people need help navigating complexity.
In a system many believe is broken, AI is helping people find their way and, increasingly, helping professionals deliver better care with less burden.
