A new AI model developed by researchers at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the German Cancer Consortium has achieved something remarkable: the ability to detect more than 170 types of cancer, with 97.8% accuracy, by analysing epigenetic markers. This is not just a scientific milestone; it’s a powerful signal that the future of non-invasive, personalised cancer diagnostics is here.

The model, named crossNN, uses a neural network to interpret DNA methylation data, essentially reading a tumour’s “epigenetic fingerprint.” It can identify cancers across all organ systems, even under challenging conditions like incomplete or low-quality samples. Impressively, it detects brain tumours with 99.1% accuracy, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for high-risk surgical biopsies.

This is personalised medicine in action. It’s also a significant step toward democratising diagnostics—improving early detection and reducing delays in care across healthcare systems, globally.

🧪 Real-World Impact: A Safer Path to Diagnosis

In one case, a patient with a hard-to-reach brain tumour avoided surgery thanks to this model. A fluid sample (CSF) was analysed instead, and the AI correctly identified the cancer type—allowing for immediate treatment.

This aligns with WHIS’s vision to innovate with empathy—ensuring technologies reduce harm while improving care outcomes.
