The Work Starts Now: Building the AI-Enabled Future of Social Prescribing
For the Global Social Prescribing Alliance (GSPA), this is a defining moment.
Social prescribing is no longer an emerging idea; it is a global movement, active across more than 40 countries and supporting millions of people to access holistic, community-based care. We have proven that connecting people to purpose, belonging, and community assets can improve wellbeing and reduce strain on over-pressured health systems.
The next step is scaling this impact responsibly and ethically which brings us to the convergence of social prescribing and technology.AI is the Enabler, Not the Replacement
Earlier this year, we released our foundational policy document, Artificial Intelligence in Digital Health and Social Prescribing (2026). This paper outlines a transformative vision: using AI to operationalize prevention at a national and global scale.
AI is the tool that can supercharge the work of social prescribing by enabling:
- Personalised Prevention: Identifying individuals at risk of social isolation or mental health deterioration for earlier referral.
- Optimized Pathways: Ensuring rapid and accurate connection to local community services.
- Equity and Inclusion: Mapping service gaps and access barriers to target investment in underserved populations.
- Outcomes Measurement: Providing real-time evaluation of wellbeing improvements and demonstrable Return on Investment (ROI). Crucially, as we emphasize in the paper, this is not about replacing the human element of care. AI should not replace link workers or clinicians; it is an enabler. It enhances them by automating administrative tasks and tracking outcomes, freeing up our human workforce to focus on the empathy, trust, and lived experience that is essential to social prescribing’s success.

A vision this ambitious requires more than just a policy paper; it requires robust, governed infrastructure. For AI to scale and deliver true impact, integration is needed across primary care systems, local authorities, and community asset platforms. Open APIs and shared standards are critical to avoid fragmentation.
This is where our new infrastructure work, supported by the Sustainability Value Collective, comes in. The Collective is the capability layer being built to govern, implement, and scale the outcomes described in the AI policy paper. It is the mechanism that transforms social prescribing from a powerful intervention model into a scalable, measurable, digitally-governed population health infrastructure.
We are actively building the standards, governance frameworks, and digital solutions required for responsible AI deployment in community health. This includes:
- Values-Based Governance: Ensuring human workers retain the authority to override any AI recommendation.
- Non-Negotiable Data Principles: Committing that people’s data is never sold or monetized.
- Inclusion by Design: Mandating hybrid models and voice AI for non-literate or least-connected users to address digital exclusion. This work starts now.
We are actively building the partnerships, the chapters, and the investment structures that will define the prevention economy for the next decade. The convergence of the GSPA’s global movement, our AI-driven vision for personalized prevention, and the robust infrastructure of the Collective means we are moving from theory to implementation.
These are exciting times ahead.
