Contaminants of Emerging Concern: A Global Health Challenge and Opportunity

These substances include pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides, and industrial chemicals like PFAS, often called “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment.
Why CECs Matter
The prevalence of CECs is increasing worldwide, raising urgent questions about hormonal disruption, fertility, and long-term reproductive health. These chemicals are pervasive—they exist in our homes, water, and food—and research shows that even small exposures can accumulate over time, posing risks for current and future generations.
Recent BBC coverage has highlighted how PFAS chemicals are embedded in everyday life—from cookware and clothing to drinking water—and their potential to disrupt human health. Even careful individuals can have measurable levels of these chemicals in their blood, which may affect reproductive health and can be passed on to children during pregnancy.
What Science Tells Us
Studies show that certain PFAS chemicals are linked to thyroid problems, kidney and liver disease, cancer, and infertility. While total elimination from the body is unlikely, strategies such as dietary adjustments (increasing fiber intake), identifying household sources of exposure, and using water filters can help reduce body burden over time.
