Dementia: The UK’s Biggest Killer – A Call for Collective Action

The latest figures on dementia deaths from Alzheimer’s Research UK are deeply sobering. Their new analysis confirms that dementia remains the UK’s biggest killer, taking more than 76,000 lives in 2024 – more than heart disease, stroke, or COPD.

While deaths from many major conditions are decreasing thanks to advances in treatment and prevention, dementia deaths continue to rise. Part of this increase reflects an aging population, but these statistics cannot simply be accepted as an inevitable consequence of growing older. Dementia is a significant and escalating health and societal challenge that impacts families, communities, the workforce, and the NHS.

An Urgent Health Challenge

Behind the numbers are real people and families facing:

  • the emotional toll of cognitive decline,
  • the pressures of providing care with limited support, and
  • the strain on already stretched health and social care services. Dementia affects every layer of society, and the rising death toll reflects the need for a coordinated, long-term response.

Science Is Making Real Progress

Despite the growing burden, there are reasons for hope. We are seeing major advances in:

  • emerging treatments aimed at slowing disease progression,
  • new diagnostic tests capable of identifying dementia earlier and more accurately, and
  • innovations in prevention and healthy ageing. These developments have the potential to improve lives and change outcomes — but they must be supported, implemented, and made accessible if they are to benefit the people who need them most.

Working Together for Better Outcomes

Addressing dementia effectively will require collaboration across the whole system — from researchers and clinicians to charities, industry partners, policymakers, and communities. Support for research, clinical trials, and service readiness will be essential as new tests and treatments emerge.

This is not about placing blame; it’s about recognising an urgent challenge and responding with shared purpose.

Dementia remains the UK’s biggest killer — but with continued progress in science, innovation, and partnership, we can change the future.
