Gareth Presch on traditional funding for healthcare is broken

11 June 2026

Over the last decade, I’ve learned one undeniable truth about healthcare: traditional funding is broken.

It is short-term, siloed, and reactive. We pour billions into treating illness, while leaving the most critical pillars prevention, mental health, and community resilience drastically underfunded.

Global healthcare is now a $12 trillion sector. Yet, 97% of that staggering wealth goes toward disease management.

Think about that for a moment. We spend trillions reactively treating illness, while leaving the actual pillars of health surviving on the margins. This is no longer just a health crisis; it is a massive economic crisis. Collapsing health systems drain national productivity, strain public budgets, and stall growth.

But within this crisis lies an extraordinary, unprecedented opportunity.

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), targeted investment in the care economy could create 300 million new jobs globally. Imagine what we could achieve if we started redirecting investment into prevention. By funding prevention, we don’t disrupt the existing healthcare system we complement it. We create entirely new, meaningful, and sustainable jobs in local economies built on the right values.

When I founded the World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS) back in 2015, the goal was simple: attract talent, ideas, and impact directly into health and wellbeing. Over the years, we reached millions of people, co-founded the Global Social Prescribing Alliance alongside international partners, and I even had the immense privilege of serving on Pope Francis’s Vatican COVID-19 Commission to look toward a fairer future for healthcare.

Yet, ideas without implementation are just words. We needed a vehicle that could turn innovation into action and unlock this new economic value.

That is why we launched the World Health Service (WHS).

Operating as a component fund of Legacy Global Programs (a 501(c)(3) public charity), WHS is the financial and governance engine designed to deploy blended capital directly into proven, scalable prevention programs like WHIS Kids, WHIS Seniors, WHIS at Work, WHISTech, WHIS Green, and community-led social prescribing.

We are moving past the dialogue phase. We are scaling values-driven solutions that build both healthier societies and stronger economies.

If you are an investor, a DAF holder, a foundation, or a corporate leader looking to transition from reactive funding to generative, sustainable economic impact, I’d love for you to join us.
