Greece Makes “Arts on Prescription” Law: A Milestone for Social Prescribing in Europe

In a significant step forward for integrated health and wellbeing policy, Greece has officially recognized “Arts on Prescription” as part of its national legal and public health framework. Signed into law and active as of early 2026, the initiative marks an important milestone for the growing global social prescribing movement.

The programme is embedded within Greece’s national recovery and resilience strategy “GREECE 2.0”, funded through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU Recovery and Resilience Facility, and represents a bold commitment to using creative arts as a structured, non-clinical intervention for mental health.

Art as a Prescription for Wellbeing

The Greek model positions creative engagement as a form of “prescription therapy”, enabling health professionals to recommend participation in arts-based activities as part of a holistic approach to mental health support.

Participants many of whom are living with conditions such as **depression, anxiety, or other psychiatric diagnoses **take part in weekly two-hour sessions in cultural venues such as galleries, theatres, and community arts spaces.

Each session is co-facilitated by an artist and a mental health professional, ensuring both creative exploration and appropriate clinical support. Activities include:

  • Visual arts
  • Performing arts
  • Creative expression workshops
  • Cultural engagement programmes The aim is simple but powerful: reduce social isolation, improve emotional expression, build confidence, and reconnect people with their communities.

A Policy Framework for Social Cohesion

The legislation reflects Greece’s broader commitment to social cohesion and healthy ageing, often referred to as the **“silver economy” **recognizing the important role that older adults play in society and the need to support their wellbeing.

By embedding arts within healthcare pathways, Greece is aligning itself with a wider European movement integrating culture and health policy, inspired by successful social prescribing models in countries such as the United Kingdom and Scandinavia.

Pilot programmes and studies running between 2024 and 2026 have explored the impact of arts engagement on psychiatric patients, working with cultural organisations and healthcare providers to measure outcomes including:

  • Improved mood and emotional resilience
  • Increased social connection
  • Greater self-esteem
  • Reduced feelings of isolation

A Global Signal for Preventative Health

For advocates of social prescribing, the Greek decision signals an important shift in thinking: health systems must extend beyond clinical treatment and embrace community-based solutions that nurture wellbeing.

As the movement grows globally, initiatives like Arts on Prescription demonstrate how culture, creativity, and community can become powerful tools for preventative health.

Gareth Presch, CEO of the Global Social Prescribing Alliance and founder of the World Health Innovation Summit, welcomed the development:

“Greece’s decision to embed Arts on Prescription in national policy is a powerful example of how governments can embrace social prescribing to support mental health and community wellbeing. Creativity, culture, and human connection are fundamental to health, and this initiative demonstrates how innovative policy can help people live healthier, more connected lives.”

A Blueprint for Future Health Systems

The Greek initiative provides a compelling blueprint for policymakers across Europe and beyond. By recognising the role of arts, culture, and community engagement as legitimate health interventions, Greece is helping redefine what a modern, preventative health system looks like.

As countries continue to confront rising mental health challenges, Arts on Prescription offers a hopeful reminder that healing does not only happen in clinics it can also happen in studios, theatres, galleries, and communities.

The Global Social Prescribing Alliance continues to champion innovative approaches that bring together health, community, and culture to support wellbeing worldwide.
