GSPA Response to the UK Governments 10-Year Health Plan: Fit for the Future
The Global Social Prescribing Alliance welcomes the UK Government’s Fit for the Future: 10-Year Health Plan for England, which sets a clear direction towards a more preventative, personalised, and community-focused model of care.
Launched in 2021 by the UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, the GSPA was founded on the principle that healthy, connected communities are essential to sustainable health systems. We are pleased to see this vision reflected in the government’s commitment to tackling the wider social determinants of health such as housing, debt, and employment through integrated neighbourhood health models and stronger community partnerships.
Key proposals in the plan, including the introduction of Community Health Workers and embedding support services within local health centres, signal an important shift in how health is delivered: focusing on people, not just patients.
As Minister Stephen Kinnock MP noted, “This is modern healthcare in the 21st century” a healthcare system that understands and addresses the holistic needs of individuals.
There is now strong evidence for the effectiveness of social prescribing in improving health outcomes and easing pressure on clinical services. To ensure success, long-term investment in community infrastructure including the voluntary, community, and faith sectors is vital.
The Global Social Prescribing Alliance will continue to work with national and international partners to support the implementation of this vision, sharing global best practices and insights that enable thriving communities and better health for all.
