Health Startups Drive UK VC Investment to Over $4 Billion in Q1 – A WHIS Perspective on Scaling Innovation for Public Good

UK health and life sciences startups raised a remarkable $1.8 billion in venture capital in Q1 2025—more than double the investment secured by the second-placed sector—according to new data from HSBC Innovation Banking and Dealroom. This surge reflects not only the sector’s commercial strength but also the growing recognition of health innovation as a strategic national and global priority.

Two standout mega-rounds—Isomorphic Labs’ $600 million raise and Verdiva Bio’s $411 million round—significantly contributed to the momentum. Notably, nearly 50% of VC funding in the sector flowed to AI-powered startups, underscoring the rising influence of artificial intelligence in reshaping diagnostics, drug discovery, patient care, and preventive health.

In comparison, enterprise software ($724.2 million), fintech ($724.1 million), energy ($372.5 million), and media ($240.5 million) followed health and life sciences in VC allocations. Overall, UK startups attracted $4.2 billion in Q1—a year-on-year increase of 8%, marking the country’s strongest Q1 performance since 2022.

From the WHIS (World Health Innovation Summit) viewpoint, these figures demonstrate a promising shift toward sustainable, people-focused innovation. As an organization working globally to empower communities through health, wellbeing, and innovation aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, WHIS welcomes this renewed investment focus on the life sciences and digital health sectors.

“This growth in VC activity is more than economic—it’s an opportunity to transform lives,” said Gareth Presch, WHIS Founder and CEO. “With AI, precision health, and prevention models leading the way, we must now ensure that investment translates into equitable access, thriving communities, and scalable impact. At WHIS, we believe these technologies should serve the common good—creating inclusive, sustainable systems of care.”

To support this mission, WHIS has partnered with the Areopa Group to establish a global network of Innovation Centres focused on health and wellbeing. These centres provide a platform for startups, researchers, policymakers, and investors to collaborate on developing scalable, sustainable health solutions—leveraging Areopa’s global footprint and intellectual capital models to unlock value across sectors. The Innovation Centres will act as hubs for piloting new technologies, training future leaders, and accelerating the deployment of community-focused innovations around the world.

Most of the capital raised in Q1 came at the Series B and Series C stages ($1.8 billion), followed by late-stage investment ($1.7 billion), indicating strong investor confidence in scaling companies that are ready to deliver real-world impact.

In a powerful regional comparison, UK startups raised as much VC investment in Q1 2025 as Germany ($1.8bn), France ($1.4bn), and Spain ($1bn) combined—further confirming the UK’s leadership position in Europe’s innovation ecosystem.

Simon Bumfrey, CEO of HSBC Innovation Banking UK, echoed this sentiment: “The UK remains Europe’s innovation powerhouse—driving revenue, producing more unicorns, and capturing a growing share of VC investment. With rising early-stage investment, fast-growing sectors, and standout IPO candidates, we’re excited to see what the rest of the year holds.”

As WHIS continues its 2025 campaign across cities including London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bologna and Berlin, this momentum provides fertile ground for cross-sector collaboration. By bringing together health leaders, technologists, investors, and communities, WHIS aims to turn investment into systemic transformation with wellbeing at the centre.
