Tackling Systemic Barriers: How Social Prescribing Reshapes Global Health Equity

Introduction True healthcare innovation requires moving beyond the walls of traditional clinics. A major step forward in this movement has just been taken. A new article published by Oxford University Press in Health & Social Workshines a spotlight on a powerful tool for change: social prescribing.Co-authored by Patricia Welch Saleeby, PhD, and Gareth Presch, CEO and Founder of the World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS), CEO co-Founder Global Social Prescribing Alliance the paper is titled The Power of Social Prescribing in Addressing Social Determinants of Health. It offers a vital framework for dismantling the systemic barriers that prevent communities worldwide from thriving.

Moving Beyond Clinical Walls Up to 80% of a person’s health outcomes are driven by non-medical factors. These are known as the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). They include:

  • Safe and stable housing

  • Reliable access to nutritious food

  • Strong social connections

  • Economic and employment stability Social prescribing bridges the gap between medical care and community support. It allows healthcare professionals to refer patients to local, non-clinical services. These can include anything from art classes and walking clubs to financial advice and housing support. By treating the root social causes of poor health, it prevents chronic illness and reduces the burden on statutory health services.

Scaling an Honest, Global Infrastructure Advancing global health delivery requires more than just good intentions. It demands robust infrastructure, data integrity, and uncompromised structural frameworks. The insights from this paper contribute directly to international health initiatives aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing). From European grant networks to intergovernmental health policies, the future of health delivery relies heavily on:

  • Absolute transparency across systems
  • Equal partnerships between clinical and community sectors
  • Data integrity to measure what truly works

A Unified Vision for the Future This publication is a testament to what can be achieved through open, international collaboration. Diverse organizations are working together to turn this vision into reality, including the Global Social Prescribing Alliance, National Social Prescribing Group Norway, and WHIS Ireland.By shifting our focus toward holistic, community-led care, we can build a world where health and wellbeing are accessible to everyone, everywhere.
