Investing in Prevention: How Social Prescribing is Redefining Health and How You Can Invest in It

Global Social Prescribing Summit 2025

From Prescription to Participation: The Rise of Social Prescribing

Across the globe, health systems are under increasing pressure—overwhelmed by rising chronic illness, mental health crises, and ageing populations. But a quiet revolution is underway: one that shifts the focus from treating illness to enabling wellness.

Social prescribing is that revolution. It connects people to non-clinical support in their communities from walking groups and gardening to art classes, volunteer roles, or time in nature. It’s about prescribing purpose, not pills. And it works.

At the World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS), we’re not just advocating for social prescribing we’re building the global infrastructure to make it scalable, investable, and sustainable.

Global Leadership and Legacy: The Birth of a Movement

In 2020, Gareth Presch, Founder of WHIS, and James Sanderson, Former Director of the NHS England Personalised Care, came together with a shared vision: to harness collective global initiatives aimed at delivering better health and wellbeing. They sought to create a global community of leaders, committed to the principles of Social Prescribing, Personalised Care, and Innovation.

This collaboration led to the formation of the Global Social Prescribing Alliance, a pioneering initiative launched in February 2021 by the UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

Since its inception, the Alliance has:

  • Hosted a comprehensive series of global webinars and summits

  • Tackled key issues in health equity, prevention, and planetary wellbeing

  • Co-developed a Global Playbook for Social Prescribing

  • Produced training materials and learning sessions

  • Facilitated site visits and international exchanges that bring global partners together This is more than a health movement it’s a global leadership platform for sustainable change.

What is Social Prescribing?

Social prescribing is a person-centred approach that empowers individuals to take control of their health by connecting them to local and natural resources. It addresses the **social determinants of health **like isolation, inactivity, and lack of purpose which account for over 70% of health outcomes.

Types of social prescribing include:

  • Green Social Prescribing: Nature-based interventions like walking in parks, forest bathing, or community gardening
  • Blue Social Prescribing: Water-based wellbeing experiences such as swimming, sailing, or coastal walks
  • Creative & Cultural Prescribing: Participation in the arts, music, heritage, or theatre
  • Community & Digital Prescribing: Volunteering, peer support groups, or digital wellbeing apps

Why Now? The Global Health Opportunity

Governments, healthcare systems, and communities are rethinking health from reactive treatment to proactive prevention. Social prescribing is at the forefront of this transformation.

Its impact is measurable:

  • Reduces GP and A&E visits
  • Improves mental wellbeing and social connection
  • Increases resilience, productivity, and quality of life
  • Delivers significant Social Return on Investment (SROI) This is not a trend—it’s the future of healthcare.
