Stepping Towards Wellbeing: How the Lonera Speedy Walk is Driving Social Prescribing in Austria
Across the globe, modern life often traps us in sedentary routines, leading to a rise in chronic disease and social isolation. In Austria, the Lonera Speedy Walk in Vienna and other cities is providing a simple, powerful antidote, transforming a casual stroll into a vital community health intervention.
More than just a fitness activity, the Lonera Speedy Walk is a regular, 5-kilometer event designed to combat the effects of desk-bound living. The idea is deceptively simple: get people moving at a brisk yet conversational pace, and connecting with others who share a similar lifestyle. This focus on easy, accessible movement, companionship, and genuine encounter without the pressure of performance makes it a perfect model for person-centered prevention.
The initiative was born out of a desire to make movement universally accessible, as explained by Erika, the Founder of LONERA:“As a competitive athlete, I learned early how much strength lies in movement. But with time, I became aware of how much the daily lives of many people have distanced themselves from this. Hours of sitting, full appointment calendars, and permanent accessibility leave hardly any room for movement and real encounter. I asked myself: How can movement become simple, accessible, and self-evident again without performance pressure? From this question, the LONERA SPEEDY WALK was created… Today, LONERA stands for exactly that: Movement that connects. Steps that give energy. A community that shows being active can be suitable for everyday life. I believe that change does not begin with a big upheaval but with a joint step with my motto ‘Bleib dran!’ (Keep at it!).”
A Local Walk with Global Support
This innovative Austrian movement is proudly supported by the World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS) and the Global Social Prescribing Alliance (GSPA), organizations dedicated to scaling community-led prevention worldwide.
The GSPA, which is actively working with partners in Austria to advance prevention-oriented healthcare reforms, champions non-clinical activities like the Lonera Speedy Walk as core components of social prescribing. Social prescribing is a framework that connects people to community-based support, such as exercise groups and social activities, recognizing that health is shaped by social factors like physical activity and belonging.
The success of the Lonera Speedy Walk illustrates the profound impact of community-led programs. It embodies the global vision of shifting healthcare from a reactive “sick-care” system to one rooted in proactive community wellbeing.
Commenting on the importance of such initiatives, Gareth Presch, Founder & CEO of WHIS and CEO of the Global Social Prescribing Alliance, states:
“Connection is the most powerful medicine we can offer.”
By combining physical movement with conversation and connection, the Lonera Speedy Walk is prescribing a life, not just medicine, in the heart of Austria. It serves as a real-world example of how local community assets are essential building blocks for a healthier, more connected world.
