**Scaling Prevention How the Global Mental Health Commission is Driving Policy and Investment **
A few weeks ago, we launched the WHIS–GSPA Global Mental Health Commission, a new international initiative dedicated to shifting global mental health practice from reactive treatment to proactive, community-rooted prevention. We established this Commission to generate evidence, shape policy, and empower communities to address the vast, stubborn gap in mental healthcare access worldwide. Now, our focus is on mobilizing global policy and capital to meet the scale of this ambition. We are strategically positioning the Commission’s work around major international policy levers, including engagement in the G20 agenda. With pioneering digital health research led by our partners in the US where Dr. John Naslund’s work is focused and the upcoming opportunity presented by the UK G20 Presidency in 2027, we see a critical chance to embed “human flourishing” and public mental health into the highest levels of global governance.
Our ultimate aim is to make the understanding of community and social connection count in policy and practice. As Gareth Presch, CEO and Founder of WHIS and GSPA, states, “Mental health cannot be solved in a clinic. It is made and sustained in communities, in relationships, in the conditions that allow people to live with dignity and belonging. This Commission exists to make that understanding count in policy, in practice, and in the lives of people who have been left behind for too long.”
Evidence-Based Innovation with Harvard and HeartMath The foundation of our strategy is the development and scaling of new, evidence-based technologies and interventions, such as our proven program WHIS Kids, driven by our founding partnership with HeartMath Healthcare and Harvard Faculty of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
- Sheva Carr, Co-Director at HeartMath Healthcare, highlights the core of the resilience-building work: “Our work is about connecting individual practices for mental resilience to the broader organizational conditions that sustain it, and embedding this evidence-based approach in global policy. Our program, HeartMath’s The Power of Heart Coherence™, is scientifically proven to balance the nervous system and reduce stress especially in challenging times.”
- Dr. John Naslund, faculty in Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, points to the proven efficacy of this approach: “The evidence is clear that community-based approaches to mental health work and that they work especially well for the populations most likely to be failed by traditional clinical systems. The challenge now is scale, standardisation, and equity. That is exactly what this Commission is designed to address.”
- Dr Robert Browning reinforces this foundation of resilience science: “By integrating resilience science into healthcare, we can move beyond simply treating symptoms to building scalable, community-accessible approaches that promote enduring mental wellbeing.” This collaboration enables us to integrate the science of wellbeing with cutting-edge global mental health research, including efforts to measure the economic return on investment of our interventions.
Engaging Funders and Corporate Social Responsibility To translate this evidence into global action, we are now actively engaging institutional capital, private funders, and corporations with strong CSR agendas. We are also looking to work with Governments on new financial structures, such as social impact bonds, to ensure sustainable funding. We recognize that scaling prevention-led health solutions requires new models of capital deployment. We facilitate this through the WHIS Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), a US-based charitable vehicle. The DAF structure allows donors, foundations, and corporate partners to deploy tax-effective, blended finance instruments that are explicitly aligned with ESG and CSR mandates - to support you can donate here.
This DAF acts as a bridge between the world of health and capital, ensuring philanthropic contributions and social impact investments are deployed into proven, measurable, health-focused initiatives, turning innovation into tangible global impact.
