A Global Movement: The Global Social Prescribing Alliance Journey to Scaling Health and Wellbeing
Since its launch in 2021 by the UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, the Global Social Prescribing Alliance (GSPA) has spearheaded a global shift toward prevention-focused, person-centred healthcare. What began as a shared vision to embed personalised care into health systems has grown into a worldwide movement now actively mobilizing social prescribing across more than 40 countries.
The GSPA’s core mission is to unify policymakers, clinicians, researchers, and community organizations to accelerate the global adoption of social prescribing. As Gareth Presch, CEO, states, “The Global Social Prescribing Alliance is creating a sustainable health model, improving wellbeing while generating meaningful jobs at scale”.Key Achievements and Global Scaling
The journey of the GSPA has been marked by significant milestones demonstrating scalable impact:
- Global Reach and Network: The Alliance has grown to a trusted global network spanning over 30 countries and includes more than 50 Global Champions. These champions represent every major region, including the UK, Australia, USA, India, Nigeria, Portugal, Spain, and Colombia. This growth confirms the global momentum behind personalised, community-led health.
- Policy and Implementation: Social prescribing is now formally recognised in national health policies in nations like the UK, Ireland, Portugal, and Australia, with active policy development underway in regions such as India, Nigeria, and Latin America. The Alliance supports this with practical resources like the Global Playbook for Social Prescribing 2026, which is available in multiple languages including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, and German, providing an implementation framework for leaders worldwide.
- Economic Impact: The GSPA champions the economic case for prevention, which is central to transforming health systems from reactive crisis management to proactive, community-led models. Research demonstrates a notable return on investment, showing up to a £4 return for every £1 invested in prevention. Working with International Communities
The strength of GSPA lies in its ability to connect diverse international partners and support local implementation:
- Convening Global Platforms: The annual Global Social Prescribing Alliance Summit serves as the primary global convening platform, bringing together participants from as many as 77 countries to share scalable strategies and policy frameworks. The 2025 Summit, for instance, attracted an audience of over 2,297 across various platforms.
- Regional Support and Frameworks: The GSPA supports community chapters across regions to build capacity and scale evidence-based models.
- Nordics: The GSPA provided the framework for the successful launch of the National Social Prescribing Group (NSPG) in Norway. This adoption is linked to innovative financing models for projects, setting an example for wider applicability across the Nordic region.
- Africa: The continent is recognized as a significant frontier for development, with Nigeria hosting the largest champion presence, and GSPA working to build policy frameworks that amplify existing community assets in countries like Ethiopia, Egypt, South Africa, and Uganda.
- The Americas: GSPA collaborates with institutions like Harvard and the University of Maryland in the USA, and highlights Fundación Keralty’s Compassionate Communities model in Colombia as one of Latin America’s most advanced implementations.
- Workforce Development: A central focus is training the next generation of social prescribing practitioners. The Link Worker role is the cornerstone of global delivery, acting as the human bridge between individuals and communities. The GSPA is addressing the growing global demand for Link Workers through training and the forthcoming Global Social Prescribing Workforce Development report (2026).
Looking Ahead to 2030
As GSPA looks toward its 2030 Global Goal, the focus remains on building the global architecture the standards, evidence base, and partnerships that will allow social prescribing to fulfill its extraordinary potential. Future work includes expanding digital and AI-enabled tools, such as the Artificial Intelligence in Digital Health and Social Prescribing report (2026), and formally aligning GSPA Champion groups with WHIS Chapters to streamline collaboration.
