Turning a Silver Tsunami into a Golden Opportunity

12 April 2025

The global demographic shift towards an older population presents both challenges and opportunities. By 2050, the number of people aged 65 years and older is expected to more than double, from 761 million in 2021 to 1.6 billion. This rapid ageing, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, necessitates substantial preparation of health and social systems to accommodate the demographic changes.

Key Facts:

  • Population Growth: The proportion of the world’s population over 60 years will nearly double from 12% in 2015 to 22% by 2050.
  • Economic Impact: The Silver Economy in the EU is projected to grow from €3.7 trillion in 2015 to €5.7 trillion in 2025, reflecting a 5% annual growth rate.
  • Healthy Ageing: Promoting healthy ageing can have significant economic benefits. For instance, extending life expectancy by one year could add $38 trillion to the global economy, while a 10-year increase could be worth $367 trillion.

Challenges:

  • Healthcare Systems: All countries must ensure their health and social care systems are robust and adaptable to meet the needs of an ageing population.

  • Social Support: There is a critical need to enhance social support systems to provide comprehensive care for older adults, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Opportunities:

  • Silver Economy: Countries can capitalize on the growing Silver Economy by fostering industries and services that cater to older adults.

  • Economic Benefits: Slowing down the ageing process and promoting healthier lifestyles can substantially boost economic output due to increased productivity and reduced healthcare costs.

Conclusion

The shift towards an older global population is inevitable, but with strategic planning and investment in health and social systems, it can be transformed into an economic opportunity. Promoting healthy ageing is not just beneficial for individual well-being but is also a smart economic strategy.
