The launch of a new WHIS Chapter in southern Portugal marks an important step in expanding grassroots-driven health innovation across Europe.
The World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS), alongside the Global Social Prescribing Alliance (GSPA), has been steadily building a global network of “Champion Chapters” locally led initiatives designed to empower communities to take ownership of their health and wellbeing. These chapters bring together students, young leaders, and community members to co-create solutions tailored to their specific environments.
The Algarve Chapter exemplifies this vision in action.
At the heart of the initiative is Susana Matias, a medical student, entrepreneur, and emerging voice in territorial health system innovation. Her work is already pushing boundaries through the development of ATLAS Health an ambitious territorial health intelligence infrastructure designed specifically for the Algarve. By integrating clinical, social, and environmental data into real-time decision-making, ATLAS Health aims to transform how communities understand and respond to health challenges.
Rather than relying solely on top-down systems, Susana’s approach emphasizes micro-pilots small, iterative projects that generate continuous learning. This model allows communities to test, adapt, and refine solutions in real time, bridging the gap between policy and lived experience. Her broader ambition is to reposition regions like the Algarve as “learning health systems,” where data, local action, and governance evolve together to improve outcomes and sustainability.
