WHISSeniors Turning Ageing Into Opportunity

8 March 2026

Global demographics are changing rapidly.

By 2050, the United Nations estimates that 1 in 6 people in the world will be over the age of 65.

Ageing populations present challenges, but also enormous opportunities.

The WHISSeniors programme focuses on healthy ageing, community connection, and falls prevention, helping older adults remain active and independent.

Falls alone represent a major public health issue.

The World Health Organization reports that falls are the second leading cause of accidental injury deaths worldwide.

Community-based interventions — including social prescribing — have been shown to significantly reduce hospital admissions and improve quality of life.

WHISSeniors supports:

• Falls prevention programmes • Community activities • Social connection initiatives • Digital health tools for older adults • Age-friendly environments

As Gareth Presch explains:

“Ageing should not be viewed as a burden. It is an opportunity to build healthier communities where people live longer, healthier, and more connected lives.”

By investing in prevention and community care, societies can reduce healthcare costs while improving wellbeing.
