Donor Advised Funds Catalytic Capital for Global Health

Unlocking Your Donor-Advised Fund: Moving Beyond Grants to Catalyze Global Health and Impact

The traditional approach to charitable giving is being redefined. The Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is no longer merely a conventional charitable savings vehicle; it is now a powerful platform for impact investing and catalytic capital. With DAF assets having soared to over $300 billion, the opportunity to create a “double bottom line”—balancing financial performance with broader societal objectives is immense. The Shift from “Grow-to-Give”

The ethos of philanthropy is shifting away from simply waiting for assets to grow before granting them. Donors are seeking more active roles, promoting the use of their assets as patient, flexible capital to support social enterprises. In fact, national surveys indicate that over 70% of DAF donors are interested in making impact investments.

Impact investing differs from traditional philanthropy by seeking to generate a positive and measurable social or environmental result alongside a financial return. Because DAF assets have already been irrevocably gifted, donors can afford to be more risk-taking or **catalytic **in their pursuit of social and environmental impact.New Tools for Deeper Impact

Today, DAFs offer tools that go beyond simple grants, allowing donors to deploy capital strategically:

  • Alternative Structures: DAFs can now deploy capital through structures like recoverable grants, working capital loans, and direct equity investments. Recoverable grants, for example, allow capital to potentially be replenished in the DAF after supporting an impactful project.
  • Democratization: Innovative platforms are lowering the barrier to entry for impact investing, with some reducing minimum investment sizes to as low as $250.
  • Custom Strategies: Donors can recommend that DAF assets be invested in social impact opportunities, or even build bespoke impact investment portfolios aligned with their ESG interests and goals. The main challenge preventing broader adoption is simply a lack of awareness among donors about their DAFs’ full capabilities.Catalyzing Health and Resilience with the WHS DAF

At the World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS) and the World Health Service Donor-Advised Fund (WHS DAF), we believe prevention, community wellbeing, and social prescribing require new blended capital vehicles to scale effectively.

The WHS DAF—established as a U.S. 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsorship vehicle is purpose-built to meet the institutional mandate for long-term, impact-aligned capital deployment. We act as a bridge for top-tier institutional capital, such as Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) and pension funds, to invest in prevention-led health solutions.

By transforming preventive health from a cost burden into an investable asset class, the WHS DAF deploys capital into models that reduce systemic risk and drive long-term productivity:

  • Strategic Investments: We channel funding into projects aligned with SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), and invest in strategic areas like Digital Health Infrastructure, Global Health Infrastructure, and Climate-Resilient Health Infrastructure.
  • Measurable Returns: Our blended finance structure targets both financial stability (targeted 4–6% annual ROI) and substantial social value (estimated £12+ Social Return on Investment (SROI) for every £1 invested).
  • Targeted Programs: The fund supports evidence-based, community-led programs, including WHISKids (children’s mental health), WHIS@Work (workforce wellbeing), and the scaling of Social Prescribing through the Global Social Prescribing Alliance. By embracing impact investing within DAFs, we move beyond the current focus on treatment-focused “sick care” which currently absorbs 97% of global resources to unlock new markets, job creation, and long-term economic value through prevention.

If you are an institutional investor, Sovereign Wealth Fund, or Family Office looking to align capital with the future of sustainable health and strategic economic resilience, we welcome a conversation.
