Turning Ageing Into Opportunity: How Senior Entrepreneurship Strengthens Cities and Communities
Globally, cities are facing an unprecedented demographic shift. By 2050, more than 1.5 billion people will be aged 65 and above - nearly 16% of the world’s population (United Nations, 2022). Yet, most urban systems health, welfare, and community services remain structured around dependency-focused models.
This gap is not just a challenge; it’s an opportunity. Older adults are among the most underutilised human capital assets globally. Their experience, networks, and time can be mobilised to drive innovation, strengthen communities, and improve wellbeing.
Enter WHISSeniors, a flagship initiative delivered through World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS) Chapters in partnership with the Global Social Prescribing Alliance (GSPA). WHISSeniors transforms the narrative of ageing from one of care to one of capability, creating peer-led, senior-driven hubs where older adults co-create solutions, mentor younger generations, and lead social and micro-enterprises.
These hubs what we call Senior Nurseries are not traditional centres. They are intergenerational, capability-focused spaces that enable seniors to:
- Launch social and micro-enterprises that address community needs
- Share knowledge and mentor across generations
- Engage in healthy, purposeful activities that improve wellbeing
- Participate in living labs that test innovative approaches to ageing and prevention Importantly, WHISSeniors aligns with global standards and frameworks, including the WHO Decade of Healthy Ageing, the WHO Age-Friendly Cities Framework, and ISO 25553 for age-inclusive organisations. This ensures that senior-led initiatives are structured, scalable, and even investable, framing prevention and healthy ageing as measurable community assets.
Cities and communities can play a transformative role by providing enabling environments — accessible spaces, micro-funding, cooperative governance structures, and connections to innovation ecosystems. The result? Seniors move from care recipients to active contributors, driving social cohesion, local innovation, and economic growth.
